Attic insulation in Missoula MT - sealed first, then covered so the heat stays in
Cold rooms upstairs and a power bill that keeps climbing? We check what's up there, seal the gaps, then insulate so your house holds heat.

Does my attic need more insulation?
Attic insulation in Missoula means adding blown-in loose fill or batts, which are precut blankets, over your ceiling so the heat you pay for stays in your rooms instead of drifting up and out the roof. Before anything gets covered, we close the gaps where house air leaks into the attic, so the new layer isn't fighting a draft.
Most calls I get come from folks in older houses with a cold room over the garage, a drafty upstairs or icicles hanging off the eaves, and the fix almost always starts with a look at what's already up there. The price moves with the size of the attic, how many inches are there now, whether old material has to come out, how many gaps need sealing and how easy the attic is to get around in. The schedule mostly turns on whether anything has to be tested or repaired before we insulate. If the cold runs through your walls and floors too, we can look at home insulation for the whole house. Your written estimate spells out each step and why it's there, so you'll see where your own number comes from.

Attic sealing and blown-in insulation work
How we do attic insulation, in the right order
First I go up and check what's already there, how many inches, whether it's dry and whether it's full of droppings or matted down from an old roof leak, because new insulation over a bad layer just hides the problem. If anything looks like vermiculite, the light, pea-size gray flakes, we leave it alone and point you to testing before we plan anything else. ENERGY STAR gives the same advice, and your local health department can name an approved lab for the test. Wet insulation, moldy or rotted rafters, weak ventilation and bath fans blowing moist air into the attic get dealt with next. Old knob and tube wiring, a type used before about 1930, gets corrected too, since insulation touching it can be a fire hazard. Then we seal around can lights, pipes and the hatch, which national guidance puts ahead of the insulation. It's the same as framing, where you check a wall for plumb before anyone hangs drywall on it. Last, we set baffles at the eaves to keep the vents clear and air moving under the roof, and we build the insulation up evenly so the edges get as much as the middle.
Most attics we finish end with a layer of blown-in insulation, loose fill blown through a hose, over the sealed ceiling, because it fills around joists and wires without leaving gaps. If the attic is only part of the story, with cold floors over a crawl space or drafty walls too, our home insulation work looks at the whole house so the pieces line up.
Why Missoula homeowners call Summit Missoula Spray Foam Insulation for attic work
I look at every attic myself
I come out to see each job in person, and I work alongside our crew on the install. The person who found the problem is the one up there making sure it gets fixed.
A framer's eye on your house
I framed houses for years and learned insulation with an established installer before we started our own company in 2023. Knowing how a house goes together tells me where the rafters, wires and leaks are before we move a thing.

What happens after you call about your attic?
Call or send a request
Call (406) 317-4027 or use the form, and we'll set a time for me to come out. Let us know how you get into the attic, a closet hatch or pull-down stairs, so I bring the right gear.
Walk the attic together
I go through the attic with you, plus the walls, crawl space or basement if they're part of the problem, and tell you what I found in plain words. Then I send a written estimate that lists each step and why it's there, so nothing on the bill is a mystery.
Handle what comes first
If testing, a wet spot or old wiring has to be dealt with, that happens before any insulation goes in. That's usually what moves the start date, and you'll know about it up front.
Seal, insulate, walk through
We seal the gaps, insulate, and clean up after ourselves. Then we walk through the finished work together so you can see exactly what's over your ceiling.
Attic insulation questions from Missoula
How much does attic insulation cost in Missoula?
Attic insulation in Missoula usually costs about $1,400 to $4,700 per job. Where yours lands depends mostly on what the attic needs before the new layer goes in, like sealing, repairs or old material coming out. That's why every estimate we write breaks out the steps.
Do I need a permit for attic insulation in Missoula?
The city answers that with its list of work you can do without a permit, so check there first if you're unsure. For each job we also check with the City of Missoula or the Missoula County Building Division, tell you what they say and take care of any permit the work needs before we start.
Is vermiculite insulation in a Montana attic dangerous?
It can be, because vermiculite mined near Libby, Montana, from the early 1920s through 1990 was contaminated with asbestos, and it may be in thousands of homes around the state. Montana extension guidance calls removal by a certified asbestos abatement contractor the best way to prevent exposure and advises against simply covering it with new insulation. Montana DEQ trains and accredits the people who do asbestos work, and we won't bury vermiculite under a fresh layer.
Is blown-in insulation better than batts for an attic?
For most attics, yes, because blown fiberglass, rock wool or cellulose usually costs less than batts and covers more fully, though installed prices vary. When you compare quotes, weigh coverage as well as price. Spray foam costs more and seals air while it insulates, and I usually only point people to it when the ductwork runs through the attic.
How long does attic insulation take, and do we have to leave the house?
National guidance says sealing and insulating an attic can usually be done in a day or two, so it makes sense to plan both together. With blown-in fill or batts, most families stay home while we work. Foam is different, and we'd go over how long until you can come back inside before you book it.
What causes ice dams on a Missoula roof?
Ice dams need three things, snow on the roof, freezing weather and a leaky or thin attic that lets house heat melt the snow from underneath. It can take as little as 2 inches of snow, so even a light storm counts. You can't change the weather here, but sealing and insulating the attic takes away the part you control.

Blown-in insulation
When the sealing's done and you want the attic filled evenly to the edges, loose fill blown through a hose is usually the most practical way up there.
Home insulation
If the cold rooms aren't only upstairs, a whole-house look at walls, floors and the crawl space shows where the rest of your heat is slipping out.
