Closed-cell foam insulation in Missoula MT - a tight seal that keeps out cold and damp

Cold floors, a damp crawl space or a drafty room over the garage? Closed-cell foam seals the gaps and holds back moisture in one layer.

Open-cell spray foam covers the walls and sloped ceiling of a wood-framed room with large windows.

Is closed-cell foam worth the extra cost in a Missoula house?

Closed-cell foam insulation is a dense spray foam that dries rigid, seals drafts and, at the thickness it's usually sprayed, barely lets moisture through. At Summit Missoula Spray Foam Insulation, we use it in Missoula houses on the spots that get both cold and damp, like rim joists, crawl space walls and basements.

Most calls I get come from older houses with cold floors, a musty crawl space or a heating bill that keeps creeping up, and the fix often starts down low with crawl space insulation or the rim joists. The price moves with how many square feet need foam, how thick it has to go and how hard the spot is to reach. The schedule turns on what has to come out first, whether the city or county wants a permit, and the stretch you'll spend out of the house while we spray. Your written estimate lays all of that out for your house.

How we install closed-cell foam insulation

  1. We suggest closed-cell where a spot has to hold back moisture as well as heat, and if something less costly would do the job, I tell you so. Foam costs more and seals air while it insulates, so in most attics, sealing the gaps and topping up with blown-in insulation, which is loose fill blown through a hose, is the better buy unless your ductwork lives up there. Framing taught me what sits behind the drywall and under the floor, so I know where a wire or pipe is likely to run before we start. Once we've settled on the spots, we take care of anything that has to come first, like pulling out old insulation that got soaked or full of droppings, because new foam over a problem just hides it. Then we cover whatever shouldn't get foam on it, spray each space between the framing to the thickness on your estimate, trim it back where it needs to sit flat, and clean up.

  2. Where moisture isn't the worry, like inside an interior wall, open-cell foam insulation is softer and less costly, and I'll point you to it when it fits. We also do work for a few small business owners, so if you've got a shop or office that needs the same care, take a look at our commercial insulation work.

Why Missoula homeowners call Summit Missoula Spray Foam Insulation for closed-cell foam

  1. I come out to every job

I look at each job myself, and I work alongside our crew on the install, so the person who sized up your rim joists is the one spraying them. I spent years framing houses before I switched to insulation, and we've run our own company since 2023.

  2. Licensed in Montana, fully insured

Montana now requires every construction contractor to be licensed with the state Department of Labor & Industry, and we're licensed and fully insured. If something goes wrong on your job, you're not the one left covering it.

  3. Foam planned for Missoula winters

The city's building design criteria put Missoula in Climate Zone 6B, the climate setting designers use to plan insulation, and that's what we plan your job around. The city applies whichever code is in effect when a permit application goes in, and a newer one starts here January 1, 2027, so I check which one your job falls under.

On closed-cell work, what matters most is foam on the right spots, in the right order, at the right thickness. Call (406) 317-4027 or send us a request with the areas you want insulated, their rough square footage and whether your house sits inside city limits.

What happens after you call about closed-cell foam in Missoula?

  1. Call or send a request

Call or send the form, and we'll get back to you to set a time for me to come out. If you mention what's bothering you, like cold floors or a damp crawl space, I know where to start looking.

  2. Walk the house with me

I go through the attic, walls, crawl space or basement with you and take my time with your questions. Then you get a written estimate that explains each step and why it's there, so you can see what you're paying for and where a cheaper option would cover it.

  3. Foam, clean up, walk through

On the day, we handle anything that has to come first, then seal, insulate and clean up while you're out of the house, as covered in the questions below. When it's done, we walk through the finished work together.

Closed-cell foam questions from Missoula homeowners

How much does closed-cell spray foam insulation cost in Missoula?

Closed-cell spray foam in Missoula usually costs about $3,000 to $4,500 to cover 1,000 square feet at 3 inches thick. That's the going rate in the area, not a quote from us. Your number moves with the square footage, the thickness each spot needs and how hard it is to reach, and your written estimate breaks that down for your house.

Why does closed-cell foam cost more than open-cell foam?

Closed-cell costs more mainly because it takes more material to fill the same space. What the extra buys you is a foam that also slows moisture, so it's usually worth it on a damp rim joist or crawl space wall and often not worth it in a dry attic.

Do I need a permit for spray foam insulation inside Missoula city limits?

Ask the city before any work starts, because its permit list names remodeling, additions and finishing an unfinished basement, not foam insulation on its own. The city asks owners to call its Building Division at 406-552-6630 before starting any type of work, and outside city limits the Missoula County Building Division covers it. We work in Missoula, Orchard Homes and the cities around them, inside and outside city limits, and for each job we check with the right office, tell you what they say and take care of any permit the work needs before we start.

How long do I have to stay out of the house after spray foam insulation?

Plan on being out during the spraying and for at least 24 hours after, which is what federal safety guidance tells homeowners. That same guidance says to talk through safety steps with your contractor, so I go over it with you ahead of time and you can line up a place to stay for everyone, kids and pets included.

What is the best way to insulate rim joists in an older Missoula house?

Spray foam works well there, because it seals the air leaks and insulates the rim joist, the band of framing at the edge of the floor, in one step. Closed-cell counts as an air barrier at 1.5 inches thick, while open-cell needs 5.5 inches. From my framing days I can tell you that band is one of the leakiest spots in an older house.

What causes spray foam insulation to cure badly?

Temperature, humidity and how well the installer mixes the foam and sprays it to thickness all affect how it cures. A poor cure can leave the foam giving off chemicals into the air and can weaken how well it works. Safety guidance also calls running the heating and cooling during spraying a poor practice, so ask any crew how they'll handle yours, us included.

Insulation work in nearby cities

  • Open-cell foam insulation

Pick open-cell when the spot stays dry and you'd rather spend less, since it seals air without the moisture-blocking layer closed-cell adds.

  • Commercial insulation

Small business owners get the same walk-through from me first, with foam planned around how the shop, office or storage space actually gets used.
